Presidents Circle Recap
Monday, Mar 5, 2018 @ 07:43 PM

The Presidents Circle Conference invites only those select few who are committed to making a difference in the industry to a special one of a kind event where:

- REALTORS® and Industry Leaders interact, and

- Political figures, journalists, consultants, and thought leaders connect

All discussing real estate, and what to expect from the coming year. Here is a recap of what happened this year:

The event was kicked off by AMY WALTER – Editor of the Cook Report, one of the most respected political insight report in the country – who gave insight into the 2018 mid term elections, and what the current tenor of the country is in relationship to politics. Her report was interesting –

- 50-75% chance the House changes from Republican control to Democratic in 2018

- 30% chance the Senate changes leadership

The hardest part for us is that we are a country that has always been internally divided – but always been united externally – and now we aren’t so sure. Her message was one of hope though because she said we will get through this – we always do.

Following Amy, we heard from Mark McKinnon – the producer of Showtimes’ series “The Circus” who talked about his time advising how to shape convincing messaging for both President George W. Bush and the Clintons, as well as talking about how the current administration is at following/ departing from his findings over the years of what 5 key factors convince people, which essentially are –

- Compelling Rationale

- A Story

- Brief Messages

- Relevance

- Authenticity & Relatability

His show will start airing a second season shortly, and is worth everyone’s time to watch if you want to have an understanding of modern politics.

NAR Economist Lawrence Yun gave an update on the 2018 marketplace and VP of Government affairs for NAR – Utah REALTOR® Kenny Parcell, talked with Bob Goldberg about the changes at NAR to focus more on how the association can better partner with and improve the member experience – which included NAR’s new reorganization and alignment which will be completed next month, but has already done away with multiple inefficiencies at NAR.

During the contrast we also heard from NAR staff leadership – Jerry Giovanello, interviewing Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and NAR Legal Counsel Katie Johnson and Ralph Holmen on the DOJ digging in to real estate firms.

In contrast to the alignment at NAR, we saw the point/ counter-point of Amy Holmes (former MSNBC Host and political analyst) and Stephanie Cutter (Democratic advisor) – who saw very different opinions on the state of American opinions on politics. Essentially a news channel debate – only moderated by NAR 2018 First Vice President (and California REALTOR®) – Vince Malta. The insight was incredible.

Our keynote speaker was former First Lady Laura Bush – who gave one of the most moving and eloquent speeches of the conference. Discussing everything from the impacts of the raw emotion on 9/11 to having the White House be a home welcoming of all. Hearing stories of the White House florist taking 7 year olds Jenna and Barb to make arrangements on the day of George H.W. Bush’ inauguration – and that of how now they twins are making a difference world-wide with their charitable efforts. It truly was an inspiring message felt by everyone – Republicans and Democrats alike.

We’d love to have you join us at the next President’s Circle event in La Quinta February 21-24. I am certain the lineup will be equally as amazing.
