The census is one of the most important initiatives that the United States federal government undertakes. It ensures that there is an accurate count of all persons living in a particular area, and through demographic and economic data from survey responses, paints a complete picture of the people and businesses that mark up an area.
The government uses this data to determine congressional representation, how federal resources get distributed to states and municipalities, and to measure the need for programs and grants to address issues such as poverty, homelessness, housing affordability and countless others. If you have not already taken the census, please do so to ensure that the Greater Los Angeles Region is accurately counted.
However, due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau has announced that it will cease counting operations by September 30th, a month earlier than expected, unless congress takes action to extend the statutory reporting deadline - the deadline by which data must be reported to the president. So far, only 60% of households in Los Angeles County have responded to the census. If the census were to cease counting on September 30th, our region would be drastically undercounted. Congress has not yet acted, and the clock is ticking.
Please take action and call or send an email to your senator ASAP urging them to extend the reporting deadline. You can use this draft language to form the basis of your email to your senator. Use your voice to help make a difference on this important issue!
